ROUTES 20: YOUR VISIT STARTS HERE!
Discover our wine region, the Corbières appellation area, by following five themed routes: the Lake and Sea Route; the Cathar Chateaux Route; the Cru Boutenac Route; the Alaric Route and the Narbonne to Lézignan-Corbières Route. Each one of them can be explored in a day, or over several days.
There is no beginning, end or compulsory stopover. Everyone can spend an indulgent moment where and when they like. Just sit back and enjoy. The worst that can happen is that you fall in love with this corner of Southern France, with its singsong accent and wine growers whose authenticity is deeply rooted in their culture.
THE CORBIERES SPIRIT
In the heart of Aude, the Corbières appellation area stretches from the outskirts of Carcassonne to the coastal lagoons of Leucate and Narbonne, and from the foothills of the Pyrenees to those of the Montagne Noire. An AOC* since 1985, it is now the most extensive appellation area in Languedoc and fourth largest in France. It produces mostly red wines along with astonishing and delicate rosés and whites. Showing crunchy fruit flavours, they guarantee a genuine wine-drinking experience amongst friends and family.
* Appellation d’origine contrôlée or Controlled appellation of origin
Although Carignan is still the most popular grape variety, Corbières is one of the appellations where wine growers are allowed to blend four or five different grapes.
Carignan forms the backbone. It mirrors the landscapes of this mountainous terrain: gravely, weather-beaten and craggy, extreme and demanding. Syrah imparts a floral, fruity note which rounds off and improves the wines. As for the delicate Grenache, it is an excellent blending variety combining fat, volume and balanced tannins. Mourvèdre contributes its complexity and propensity to age.
Long gone are the days when wines were heavy and rustic – the next generation of young wine growers has come of age. Greater control, understanding and viticultural management of Carignan combined with the wine growers’ capacity for thought and blending possibilities have resulted in a more balanced relationship between vineyard sites and grape varieties, giving Corbières wines a truly contemporary twist.
Fruitier and crisper, Corbières wines are delivering a whole new assertive style. They reveal a kind of minerality and freshness yet retain their intrinsic personality and complexity.
